NOMADMIX DECKCASE
With the advance of digital DJing via laptops, many of the younger generations have been able to afford to DJ at a low cost. Therefore, this has led to many to use surfaces or tables that are not conducive to DJing and can cause prolonged lumbar spine injuries and strains as a result of this.
To combat this. A research questionnaire was used to gain user insight as well as the feasibility of a multifunctional DJing oriented product. The main insights were a desk that could be used at house parties in conjunction with a seated table/desk and a flight case which could also be used in a users bedroom.
After this...
The deck case was born!!!
A set of initial ideas with aims of combine a DJ table and a flight case together.
The design was enhanced to focus on the technical details including how it would cantilever when in a bedroom and at a party. It also informed how the design would use modular parts to transform from one mode to another.
A focused effort to refine the mechanisms that would allow the desk to function. These involved how the lid would rotate around the desk and how the modular parts would attach and detach.
Another series of developments of how the modular system would attach and detach.
A number of modular socket configurations were iterated to inform which would be best fit aesthetically and maintain it's functionality.
The products touchpoints were also another consideration to make. This being to be practical whilst tying in with the rest of the design language.
Originally, A laptop stand for the desk was the main go to. Upon discovery during testing this would hinder the products counter balance. A lightweight alternative was used, this being a removable external screen.
To ensure the products scope of the DJ Controller market. The overall size would accommodate the largest controller on the market, these cut-outs being controller specific. For easy egress, the deck-case would use a internal cut-out where the decks could be placed and slid into the body of the case without restricting access to the audio/MIDI ports.
Cable management was another design query that had to be addressed. So, therefore, a series of cable management plugs were created so that cables could be easily routed where desired whilst keeping a weathertight seal when in transport.
